The ability to think on our feet is a great life skill and making things up on the spot is an essential ability for acting.  This fun week will focus on ‘performance impro, ’ often known as Theatre Sports – improvising characters and scenes in front of an audience to amaze and delight them.  You will build your performance expertise and gain confidence before showing off your talents on the Friday afternoon.

SIGHT READING & AUDITION TECHNIQUE (SENIORS 12 -16 years & ADULTS 16 years+) | Mon 29 July 13:30 – 20:00 (Double session)
With Mercy Ojelade
The audition is probably the most stressful situation an actor can find themselves in.  Arm yourself with some tools, techniques and tips from Mercy to help you succeed in this part of the casting process.  Increasingly actors are asked to self-tape for a part so this will be one YATI workshop where you will be encouraged to have your phone in class!  Learn some basic ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ when it comes to the self-tape.
Sight reading sounds scary because we assume it’s about reading – but it’s not!  It’s about acting and demonstrating to the casting director you can play the part.  Mercy will introduce you to the technique of sight reading so you can really impress!

IMPRO! (SENIORS 12 -16 years & ADULTS 16 years+) | Tues 30 July 13:30 – 16:30
With Andrew Harries
We all know that improvising is ‘making it up on the spot.’  Trouble is that being put on the spot can send us right inside our heads to a place marked ‘panic’ where we end up freezing.  Good improvisation takes place in the senses and in the body and should even be fun!  Spend the afternoon with YATI’s Artistic Director Andrew getting out of your mind!

COMBAT (SENIORS 12 -16 years & ADULTS 16 years+) | Tues 30 July 17:00 – 20:00
With Zhenya Leverett
Ever wondered how those film, TV and theatre fight scenes that make you flinch are created?  Our Combat teacher Zhenya will show you how.  You’ll start with the basics and work your way up to some very realistic looking (but perfectly safe) violence and learn a thing or two about acting in the process.

SINGING & MUSICAL THEATRE (SENIORS 12 -16 years & ADULTS 16 years+) | Weds 31 July 13:30 – 20:00 (Double session)
With Susannah Gidley
Sometimes musical theatre is dismissed as a light entertainment art form, not taken as seriously as straight drama.  This does it a disservice because musical theatre performance requires passionate and inspired acting AND singing AND dancing and when these elements come together it can touch our souls like no other art form.   Spend a day with our own resident Musical Director and Musical Theatre performer Susannah and learn how to bring all these elements together to tell stories that move and stir us in a magical way.

THE METHOD (SENIORS 12 -16 years & ADULTS 16 years+) | Thurs 1 Aug 13:30 – 16:30

With Andrew Harries
Everyone has heard the term ‘method acting’ but few really know what it is.  Some method actors ‘live the role’ 24/7 but that is the extreme end of the spectrum!  It’s really about tuning up the mind and body and ‘living truthfully in imaginary circumstances.’  Come and find out how to do it!

PHYSICAL THEATRE | Thurs 1 Aug 17:00 – 20:00

With Jared Garfield
Long gone are the days when physical theatre was a part of the performance fringe – it’s now very much centre stage with companies like Complicite and Frantic Assembly (with whom former YATI student Jared has recently toured) gaining loyal fans and critical and commercial successes everywhere they go.  Come and learn how to think with your body!

VOICE (SENIORS 12 -16 years & ADULTS 16 years+) | Fri 2 Aug  13:30 – 16:30
Arguably there is nothing more important for an actor than their voice.  If you’ve cracked physical theatre and impro already this week – now it’s time to give your voice a proper theatrical workout.  What techniques and exercises should you be doing to ensure you project, articulate and annunciate properly and how can you make your voice as expressive and free as possible?  Join one of our Professional Acting Foundation Course voice tutors, the phenomenally experienced Lucy Atkinson, and get yourself really heard!

SHAKESPEARE FOR THOSE THAT HATE SHAKESPEARE (SENIORS 12 -16 years & ADULTS 16 years+) | Fri 2 Aug 17:00 – 20:00
With Andrew Harries
Hate Shakespeare?  This might be the workshop for you!  Love Shakespeare?  This might be the workshop for you!  Andrew believes that the reason we often find Shakespeare ‘boring’ is that he is too often taught as an academic subject rather than a dramatic one.  If we approach Shakespeare as an actor, rather than a student of English, all sorts of exciting things happen and we can learn to love the bard!

SUMMER GLEE CLUB (JUNIORS 6 – 11 years) Mon 5 – Fri 9 Aug 10:30 – 17:00
We couldn’t have summer school without a bit of Glee!  Glee is all about having fun mashing up great pop songs from the past and present, reinventing the familiar with new arrangements, throwing in a bit of acting, sprinkling some dance moves over everything and delighting friends and family with a performance at the end of the week.
£199/£149 concessions (£60 deposit)
Tutors – Susannah Gidley & Niall Hemingway

INTRODUCTION TO ACTING (PRE-JUNIORS 4 – 6 years) | Mon 12 Aug  – Fri 16 Aug 10:30 – 1:30pm

With Talia Cohen
You’re never too young to start learning to act – in fact the younger the better!  There’s a good reason we talk about plays, players and playing a role – acting is really all about play and children are the best players.  Older actors sometimes have to be reminded of being children and learn how to play again.  Come and see how creative play can be turned into acting, creating theatrical stories and performing with confidence!
£99/£79 concessions (£40 deposit)

We are running two ACTING FOR CAMERA Workshops this summer, one for Juniors (6-11 years) and one for Seniors and Adults (12+ years)
Great acting is great acting and great actors can excel on both stage and screen.  But there are differences between the two crafts.  Come and see for yourself how you come across on the big screen (YATI has one now!) and learn about the adjustments to your acting you’ll need to be making for the small screen and the cinema screen.  Plus you’ll learn some of the technical aspects you’ll need to master on a set.

JUNIOR ACTING FOR CAMERA (JUNIORS 7 – 12 years) | Mon 12 Aug  – Fri 16 Aug 14:00 – 17:00pm

With Jared Garfield & Talia Cohen
£99/£79 concessions (£40 deposit)

SENIOR ACTING FOR CAMERA (SENIORS 12 – 15 years) | Mon 12 Aug  – Fri 16 Aug 17:00 – 20:00pm

With Jared Garfield & Derek Oppong
£99/£79 concessions (£40 deposit)

Mon 19 – Fri 30 Aug  10:30 – 17:00 (excluding Sat & Sun 24 & 25)

Director Jonny Woolf
There’s nothing quite as exciting as putting on a show!  And with a bit of effort, it can even be done in just two weeks!  So if you fancy learning lines, creating a character, working out your blocking (how you move on stage) being part of the ensemble (actors working together) getting to grips with props, scenery, costume, lighting cues and special effects – come and spend the last two weeks of summer school with us and make some theatre!
£310/£250 concessions (deposit £75)
