Back in May this year, YATI along with an award-winning playwright Linda Wilkinson and local Islington elders held workshops at the Blessed Sacrament Primary School to share their memories of Islington and the canal with the current Year 5 and 6 pupils. These colourful stories or more correctly ‘antics’, of 10 year-olds in the 1940s to 1960s were both hilarious and enlightening, and Linda Wilkinson moulded these stories together to create a new play “The Islington Canal Tales” as a special commission. The initial day was also topped off with a boat trip through the Islington tunnel that travels through nearly 900 metres of subterranean Islington – very spooky indeed!
This is the first stage of a three year project culminating in the 2020 anniversary of the completion of the canal, and is thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
On Weds 18 July, 38 young pupils performed the light comedy on top of a canal boat on the Regents Canal near Kings Cross. They put all of their energy into performing, and it proved to be a memorable experience for all involved.
The next chance to see The Islington Canal Tales is at the Angel Canal festival on Sunday 2 Sept at 1.30pm.
