Andrew studied drama at the University of Bristol where he specialised in direction and design. Student productions include ‘The Duchess of Malfi’, Caryl Churchill’s ‘Cloud Nine’, ‘Female Parts’ by Dario Fo and Liz Lochhead’s ‘Blood and Ice’..
In 1991 he created ABSOLUTE THEATRE and has directed all their productions to date. These include several plays by Federico Garcia Lorca; ‘Yerma’, ‘Dona Rosita the Spinster’ (London Premiere), ‘Don Perlimplin’, ‘The Butterfly’s Evil Spell (for the THEATRE ROYAL BATH) and the British Premiere of The Shoemaker’s Wondrous Wife’ which was invited to headline Lisbon’s International Theatre Festival in Almada.
Other productions for ABSOLUTE include a groundbreaking staging of Ibsen’s ‘When We Dead Awaken’ which was nominated for Best Production at the 1994 London Fringe Awards, a highly praised production of Tony Harrison’s version of Moliere’s ‘Misanthrope’, a box office record breaking production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ for the Brewhouse Theatre Taunton and ‘Queen Christina’ by Pam Gems which had three London runs and also visited the Labyrint Theatre in Prague.
More recently ABSOLUTE has produced ‘Opera Soap’, a new opera in three episodes for which Andrew wrote the libretto and which was staged at BAC, performances of Felix Mitterer’s ‘Siberia’ (with Dudley Sutton) and the British premiere of ‘Spiel Im Berg’ (Play in the Mountain), ‘Play Strindberg’ with Kika Markham and a new opera by Peter Cann and Simon Fraser, ‘The Crowgate’, which was performed by 600 pupils from 8 schools in Newham, East London. ABSOLUTE THEATRE also staged ‘Jericho Stone’, a spectacular multi media production in Kingston Jamaica.
Andrew created Battersea Square with BAC, a sixteen episode series of live, improvised site specific soap opera which was featured on BBC2’s ‘Never Ending Stories’.
From 1999 to 2005 Andrew was associated with the THEATRE ROYAL BATH, working with their Young People’s Theatre on productions such as ‘Tis Pity She’s A Whore’, ‘20.000 Leagues Under The Sea’ and ‘Electra’, and creating professional touring productions along with his Absolute Theatre colleagues; a highly controversial staging of Wedekind’s ‘Spring Awakening’, ‘Twelfth Night’ and ‘The Rivals’. He has directed ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ for the BATH SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL and Little Shop of Horrors for the USTINOV STUDIO. (2004).
Andrew has been Artistic Director of THE YOUNG ACTORS THEATRE since 2005. Productions include ‘The Man of Mode’, ‘Citizenship’ by Mark Ravenhill, ‘A Bridge To The Stars’ (Henning Mankell), ‘A Christmas Carol’ and the premiere of ‘Islington – The Opera’, and ‘Loveplay’ by Moira Buffini.
Over the last few years Andrew has also directed and designed a number of other operas including ‘The Magic Flute’, ‘Don Giovanni’ and ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ (at Prior Park in Bath).
